Dumpster Weight Limits and How Overage Works
A dumpster has two limits: the volume printed on its side and the weight the rental includes. For heavy debris the weight limit comes first, long before the box looks full.
Published weight capacities
| Size | Republic Services | Dumpsters.com typical |
|---|---|---|
| 10 yard | 2–3 tons | 1–2 tons |
| 15 yard | 2–3 tons | 1–2 tons |
| 20 yard | 4–5 tons | 2–3 tons |
| 30 yard | 6–7 tons | 2–4 tons |
| 40 yard | 8–9 tons | 4–5 tons |
These are what the box and truck can carry. The tons included in the price are often lower. The published list for New Hampshire includes 1 t with the 10-yard, 1.5 t with the 15-yard, 2 t with the 20-yard; Central Massachusetts includes 1 t with the 10-yard, 2 t with the 15-yard, 3 t with the 20-yard.
Worked examples
- A 20-yard of remodel debris. Filled level with mixed construction debris at EPA's 484 lb per cubic yard, a 20-yard weighs 9,680 lb, or 4.8 tons. That is inside Republic's 4–5 ton capacity but 2.8 tons over the 2 tons in the New Hampshire price.
- A 25-square roof. One layer of architectural shingles at 210 lb a square weighs 5,250 lb (2.6 tons). See the 25-square roof page.
- A small patio. 100 sq ft of 4-inch concrete at 150 lb per cubic foot is 5,000 lb, already 2.5 tons. See concrete removal.
How to stay under
Size by weight for heavy debris (use the sizer), keep shingles, tile and concrete out of a box ordered for light debris, and ask the hauler three things: the included tons, the overage rate per ton, and whether heavy debris needs a separate container.

Questions
What is the weight limit of a 20 yard dumpster?
Republic Services publishes a weight capacity of 4 to 5 tons for its 20-yard roll-off; Dumpsters.com says a 20-yard typically holds 2 to 3 tons. The tons included in your own rental price can be lower: the published New Hampshire list includes 2 tons.
What happens if a dumpster is overweight?
The hauler weighs the box at the landfill or transfer station and bills the tons over the included amount as an overage. None of the published New Hampshire and Massachusetts price lists found prints the overage rate, so ask for it before booking.
